People in Ontario make more than 14,000,000 visits each year
to the province's community laboratories.
OAML member laboratories
perform more than 95% of all diagnostic testing for patients
outside of hospitals. Our members operate facilities in all
regions of Ontario and serve communities through more than
325 licensed laboratories and specimen collection centres located throughout
the province.
All OAML member facilities are licensed by the Ministry of
Health & Long Term Care and adhere to stringent infection control procedures
for the protection and safety of patients. The patient is
our primary client.
Ontario's community laboratories are in the front lines of
health care. When your doctor sends you to the lab for tests,
chances are an OAML member laboratory is where you go. During
the SARS outbreak in Toronto, when hospital closures
meant outpatients couldn't get their lab tests done, the Ministry
of Health turned to Ontario's community laboratories for help.
OAML member laboratories stepped in to fill the breach.
At the core of the success of Ontario's community laboratories
are professionals in the laboratory sciences, working for
the benefit of the people in their own communities. These
are highly-skilled knowledge workers who take pride in their
work, and it shows.
Community laboratories are highly automated; tens of thousands
of tests are handled every day. Courier networks cover the
province and your specimen is delivered to the lab for testing
and a result reported back to your doctor, usually within
twenty-four hours.
